Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT)

A Home Sleep Apnea Test is a simple test you do at home to check for obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly slows or stops during sleep. It records breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, and airflow while you sleep in your own bed.

Why is this test done?

Your healthcare provider may recommend HSAT if you have symptoms such as:

  • Loud or frequent snoring
  • Pauses in breathing during sleep (reported by a bed partner)
  • Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Morning headaches
  • Poor concentration
  • High blood pressure or other heart risk factors

HSAT is typically used for patients who are suspected of having moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and do not have complex medical conditions.

How is the test done?

  • You will be given a small portable device to take home.
  • Before going to sleep, you will place sensors on your body (usually a finger probe, a breathing tube near the nose, and chest or belt sensors).
  • You sleep as usual while the device records data overnight.
  • In the morning, you remove the equipment and return it as instructed.
  • A sleep specialist interprets the results, reviews and discusses with you on your follow up appointment
